We believe that
time-outs loose their effectiveness when over-used.
Try using other techniques for disciplining and using time-outs
when all else fails.
Time-Out
Don’ts:
1. talking to or arguing with your child BEFORE or AFTER
placing him in time-out
2. using a bedroom or interesting place for the time-out
3. keeping a child in time-out for too long
4. threatening to use time-out
5. shaming or embarassing your child with time-out
Time-Out Do’s:
1. selecting one target behavior on which to use time-out
2. picking out a boring place for the time-out
3. explaining in 10 words or less the reason for the time-out
4. using a timer, set the time and place it within hearing
distance of the child
5. asking the child, after, why he was sent to time-out,
and what could he do so he doesn’t have to go into
time-out again
