Help Articles - Is it ever ok to hit? |
|
We often turn to hitting when everything
else we have tried has failed. The fact is that hitting hurts.
When a child is hit, they often focus the “the pain”
and not what the parent is trying to communicate. |
|
It’s normal to be angry, frustrated and
overwhelmed. It’s also normal to feel inadequate, and
unsure of yourself as a parent. |
|
If you feel that you may loose control with
your child, put distance between yourself and your child. |

|
Once you feel in control
of your own emotions and have taken the time to think about:
1. Exactly what you want to say
2. How you want to say it
3. What the consequences are for the negative behavior
ONLY THEN should you sit down
calmly and respectively with your child. Make eye contact,
be firm, be fair, and say it in a few words.
Do NOT make threatening comments. Say what you really mean
or don’t say it at all!
